How to ship things across country?

I just visited the post office to find out what can be sent across the country.

I was told there is a max size of one meter. They will not accept a computer & screen, a printer, etc.

How do others move their stuff from one location to another?

Is it worth it, or dump & buy again?

I've been moving around the country a LOT lately.  Seems like I've been moving every year.  So I'm definitely qualified to answer your question.  Or at least try.

The post office probably won't allow you to send computer equipment unless you send it in its original packing.  So if you've already trashed your printer's packaging and try to re-package it using your own styrofoam, newspaper, what have you, they probably won't allow it.

I've moved around using the Chinese M bag.  It's just a large, heavy duty canvas bag that can double as a laundry bag.  I've used it for sending books, clothes, shoes, teaching materials, etc...anything that's not fragile or volatile.  It's not that much cheaper to send things via M bag though.  It all depends on the weight and your destination.  For this last move from Changzhou, Jiangsu, to Weifang, Shandong, I sent a box full of books.  I asked for the largest box size available.  Later I sent an M bag full of clothes and of similar weight.  I spent an average of 50 RMB on both.

I also had an oven which I felt like I hadn't used enough so I felt it wasn't worth buying another one.  It came w/me as luggage on my train.  Difficult though, lugging that thing around along w/ my luggage and computer laptop. If you have a lot of heavy stuff to move you could contact a moving company.

Hello Allen

The simple answer is to freight by train.  You can freight from the freight train
station closest to you and then you have to pick it up at the freight train
station closest to your destination.  You
can specify the date you want it to arrive and it will usually arrive close to
that date.

However, just some words of advice you must leave your boxes
unsealed as the workers at the station will make a list of every item in your
boxes/bags.  Therefore, keep things
together that are the same in each box or bag.  However, in saying that what I will do is pack clothes, towels, sheets
and pillows around my computer items or other breakables.  Do not have any of your boxes/bags heavier
than two people can handle comfortably.  The
workers are looking also for dangerous items.  There is a very long list of dangerous items displayed in the
station.  You do not pay by the box/bag
you pay by the kilo multiplied by distance so the freight rate is reasonable.  The workers will ask you the value of the contents
of each box do not over value your things, as you will pay a basic insurance on
the value of your shipment.  Do not pay
the deluxe insurance as most of the money only goes into the pockets of the
workers.

It will take a couple of hours at the station and once the
boxes/bags are sealed you can put more binding on them yourself if you wish but
the workers do a good job.  At the other
end pickup is easier but if any box or bag is broken or looks like it has been
mishandled open it before you leave and make sure that nothing is missing or
damaged other wise your insurance is null an void.  I have only ever had one box damaged and
everything was intact inside.  Give your
new foreign affairs officer’s phone number as a contact number just in case you
shipment arrives before you do.  They
cannot collect your freight for you, as you have to hand to the freight train
station your receipt before you can get your things.

I hope this is of some help.

I bought a large steamer trunk for 50 Rmb
It'll fit in the trunk of a taxi
Take it to the train station, and ship it.
I shipped a whole lot of junk, that way. I've now got around a dozen
trunks, and I shipped those from Shanghai to Manila real cheap.

<dump & buy again>

If you're travelling by train, porters can help you with large pieces of luggage.  They are very helpful after getting out of the taxi.

I've moved things across the country several times using a moving company. It's much easier than using the post or railways. They bring a truck to your apartment and pick up all the boxes and things, then deliver them a week or so later to your destination. The cost was reasonable. I'm thinking it was 800 yuan to move across the country, though I could be mistaken. You'll need to have a Chinese friend or someone from the school call around to find a moving company. Make sure they move things by truck and not train. I hired a company that picked my things up in a truck and then shipped them by train. They didn't arrive in good shape. It's much better if it's all by truck. They can build a crate around your bike to ship it.

[Mod Note: Further discussion on how to move items within China can be posted on the LIFE list.]

Train & by post is to difficult of getting everything to them.

I will use a logistics company to pick up & deliver to the door, probably on a pallet, shrink wrapped.

That's the plan, hope it works.

You should find out the merchandise train service in your local area. The price is marked for the whole country. Good luck!
